The advantages and disadvantages of Star network topologies
Amongst all the types of network topology, the star topology has proven to be successful. Many large organizations opt to deploy their wired networks using the star topology layout. The star topology is successful because the each computer is connected by point-to-point link to a central control, which is a switch. With this network layout, the devices are not directly connected to each other which is one of the reasons why the flow data traffic is much more smooth.
The controller switch helps to exchange the data between the two nodes. In a star topology network if device A wants to send data to device B then device A send the data to the central controller (switch) which then sends the data to device B.
Advantages of a Star Topology
1. In the star topology, there is less cabling if the network is limited to a floor.
2. To setup the star topology in the organization is less expensive than a mesh topology because you just need only one link and one L/O port.
3. You can install the star topology easily and reconfigure.
4. It is robust, if any link of the network fails then the other devices on the network wii continue can still communicate.
5. Easier fault detection.
Disadvantages of using a Star Topology
1. If you are setting up the biggest network in the organization then you required the heavy cabling due to the distance, which cost will be higher.
2. You are required to connect each computer node to a switch however; if the switch is far from where the computers are located then you need to use heavy cabling.
3. If the switches become out of order, then whole network will cease to work.
